Our Volunteer Program

TLC recognizes and values the contribution and the passion of our volunteers in partnering with staff to fulfill the mission of TLC… Lives are transformed and the community is taken to a higher level.

We believe:

  • We could not open the doors of TLC without our volunteers who significantly enhance, expand and upgrade the services TLC provides.
  • TLC strives to create an environment that welcomes, supports, empowers, and appreciates our community of volunteers so they can be effective contributors and advocates.
  • Our volunteers can perform any given task effectively and responsibly as a result of the interactive collaboration with our staff.

Volunteers R Us.

Meet a Volunteer!
Joan Cunningham

Joan is the TLC Volunteer manager and is responsible for overseeing the volunteer egagement, recruitment and retention, education, appreciation and organization efforts.  She works with the staff to ensure proper coverage and training for the volunteers.  Joan excudes a quiet confidence and calm in all she does. She is a great listener and bubbles over with wonderful ideas.

Joan served in the Air Force for 30 years and throughout her many assignments she performed duties as an instructor pilot, a commander at several levels, and as a senior staff officer. She is married to our Food Programs Manager, Michael Winton, and they have one daughter, Natalee, who is attending Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio

Tri-Lakes Cares provides service to our community because of over 200-committed community members who give us countless hours each year.  We have a group of dedicated volunteers who carry out many of the day-day operational activities for Tri-Lakes Cares. We have nearly 85 active volunteers, many who have been with us for 5-15 years. Volunteers keep the warehouse running, staff the pantry during open hours, and provide tax help.  They manage programs, keep up with extra administrative duties, people special projects and assist with fundraising.  The volunteers greet our clients with a smile so we are able to make a difference each day.  Our volunteers are pivotal members of our team.  They out number our staff by more than 22 to 1, so they help with just about every aspect of our service.  We count on our volunteers to contribute countless hours toward our mission, and they share their precious assets of time with us.

Several groups in the community continue to support our efforts: Kiwanis (formerly Sertoma) with the Empty Bowl Dinner, Harvest of Love, and the Holiday Program; a number of Boy and Girl Scout Troops and individual Eagle projects; church youth groups; adult church groups and others from throughout the community.

Representing warehouse work, staffing the pantry, tax help, administrative help, special projects such as managing the Federal Commodities Program, and fundraising.  Our group of volunteers contributes an estimate of over 15,000 hours each year!  Volunteer opportunities have increased exponentially in our new facility and at our Hangers Thrift Store.

Opportunities range from the very general -we can always use folks with trucks - to opportunities that meet very specific needs.  We have “managerial” opportunities for those who want a more in depth leadership role.
